2021 IBA  All Yooperland   IV  SS1K

Saturday July 10, 2021

Wakefield, Michigan

In 2017 the first All Yooperland SS1K was run. This was the first SS1K done entirely in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Rich Henrion, who is a Yooper himself and 6 other Riders finished the ride. One Rider had an electrical problem and did not finish. The Ride started & ended in Sault Ste. Marie and a Lake Superior SS1K was done by another group of Riders the same day.

In 2019 the All Yooperland II SS1K was completed by 30 Riders and 1 Pillion starting and ending in Iron Mountain. In 2020 the All Yooperland III SS1K was completed by 24 Riders and 1 Pillion again starting in the Soo.

So, this ride is becoming a tradition, of sorts. In 2021 the Ride will start and end in Wakefield in the western U.P.

All makes and models of bikes are welcome to do the ride, including Trikes, and Spyders.  Sorry, the IBA has changed it's policy and Slingshots Riders cannot earn an IBA Certificate.  If you are a Slingshot Rider you are welcome to join us but no cert will be issued.

This is not a big group ride.   Rider's are welcome to form their own small groups or do the ride solo.

I am organizing this ride as a courtesy and for the camaraderie.  All participating Riders do their own ride and assume all risks for their ride, as with any other IBA certified ride.

1,002 miles done all in the beautiful U.P. of Michigan

There is a thread about this ride on the ADV Rider Forum

There will be a dinner on Friday at the Big Snow Indianhead Mountain Resort on Indianhead Road ( not the nearby Big Snow Blackjack Mountain Resort ) , a few miles north-west of Wakefield.  between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm with a Rider's meeting after dinner to answer any questions about the route and required receipts.

The ride will start the next morning @ 6:30 am at the Holiday Station in Wakefield, or earlier for Riders desiring to leave before 6:30 am if they were at the meeting on Friday or have done a ride I have organized in the past.

It is not mandatory, but advisable, for Riders to be at the dinner and Rider's meeting on Friday, especially if this ride will be your first IBA SS1K.  And Friday is a good time to meet other Riders and form small groups, if you desire, etc.

All Riders must be present Saturday morning for a 6:00 am pre-departure Rider's meeting at the Holiday station for Rider's who were not able to attend the Friday meeting after dinner.  Riders will have their odometer reading recorded before departure.   Riders will be supplied a list of all required mandatory ADTL ( Accurate Date, Time, and Location Receipts ) and the locations where digital pictures are required to be taken and an envelope to place all receipts in. Your odometer reading will also be recorded at the end of your ride.

A blank and UNLOCKED digital memory card is required at the beginning of the ride for the required pics, and will be returned by mail to the owner a few days after the end of the ride.

No, cell phone pics emailed to me are not acceptable.

I need to  receive the Rider Information Form at least 1 week before the ride.  You may hand in the completed form on Friday or the morning of the ride, if for some reason you are unable to mail the form to me one week in advance of the ride.

Note :  You do not have to already have an IBA number to do this ride !

As a courtesy and free service to you, I will be submitting a Rider's information spreadsheet to the IBA to include all the data of those that successfully complete the ride. This will streamline the certification process for you. All you need to do is fill out the form and then do the Ride and hand in the required receipt & memory card after you complete the ride!   You do the ride, and I'll take care of the paperwork as a courtesy to you.

After completing the ride, ASAP, either send a PayPal payment to the IBA ( in USD funds ).

Note:  You don't need to have a PayPal account to make the payment using Paypal.

To use PayPal :  Go to PayPal.com, and follow the directions.

Make a notation on your payment:  "July 10, 2021 All Yooperland SS1K" and send the required calculated payment to: paypal@ironbutt.com

If for some reason you are unable to use Paypal, you may send a check or cashiers check ( in USD funds ) or USPS money order made out to the "Iron Butt Association" after you complete the ride.  Make a notation on your check or money order,  "July 10, 2021 All Yooperland SS1K"  and mail to :

Iron Butt Association, P.O. Box 4223, Lisle, IL 60532

Do not pay the fee by using the IBA STORE , that won't work.

Rich Henrion has made special arrangements with the Big Snow Indianhead Resort for rooms.  About $79 + taxes for a double room and if you get a room for 2 nights, then the third night is a freebie.

However, the Resort is not accepting reservations until after April 1st.

There are also a number of motels in Ironwood about 15 minutes from Wakefield and a few between Wakefield and Ironwood.

Ride Requirements :

Here are the required 16 ADTL Receipts ( ADTL means a receipt that includes an accurate date, time and location ) and Pics that are required ( in this order ). NOTE :  ADTL Receipts do not need to be for gas.   Any ADTL Receipt is acceptable.  You need the receipt to prove you were at that location at that time/date.

Write you odometer reading on each ADTL Receipt, and if you are using a GPS, also write your GPS trip meter reading on each ADTL receipt.

Here is the list of what you exactly need to certify your ride :

Collect ADTL Receipts and take Pics in this order :

2.) Pic of the sign at the Gay Bar in Gay, MI with your bike also in the pic.

3.) Pic of the sign at the terminus of US-41 a mile or so east of Copper Harbor with your bike also in the pic.

4.) Pic of the big sign in the parking lot at the summit of Brockway Mountain Dr. off M-26 outside Copper Harbor with your bike also in the pic. NOTE: Don't depart the parking lot by taking the same road you rode up on. There is another road exiting the opposite side of parking lot.

5.) Pic at the Jam Pot (on the left), across the road from the Monastery, just north of Eagle River ( not Eagle Harbor ) with your bike in the pic.

6.) Pic of the Calumet Opera Theatre on 6th Street with your bike also in the pic.  Turn Right onto Pine Street off M-26, then turn  left after about six blocks onto 6th Street.  The Opera Theatre is on the left 1 block after you turn onto 6th Street.

7.) ADTL Receipt  in Lanse or Baraga.

8)  ADTL Receipt in Bruce Crossing.

9.) Pic of the Yooper Dome ( Superior Dome ) on the NMU Campus with your bike in the pic.  Turn left onto Wright Street ( look for the Cenex gas station ) on the west side of Marquette, then go about 4 miles and then turn right onto Lincoln Ave.

10.)  ADTL Receipt  in Grand Marais.

11.)  On M-123 north of Newberry - Gene's Tahquamenon General Store ADTL Receipt or a pic of the store or a pic of the sign at the entrance to the Tahquamenon State Park near the store ( not the River Mouth State Park ) with your bike also in the pic.

14.) ADTL Receipt from any business in Iron Mountain. There is a Holiday station ( 24 / 7 ) on the east side of town, BTW.

This is an important required receipt to prove you did the ride all in the U.P. and did not take a short-cut through Wisconsin on US-2.   It will be dark, so do the best you can.

16.) ADTL  Receipt at the Holiday station in Wakefield.

17.)  End of Ride - Have your odometer reading recorded and turn in your receipts & memory card containing your pics at the Indianhead Mountain Resort.

Very Good to Know Information :

IBA Archive of Wisdom   Highly recommended reading, especially for first time SS1K Riders

IBA SS1K General Information

Fatigue and Long Distant Motorcycle Riding , by Dr. Don Arthur, M.D. and LD Rider himself.  Hey, if you get tired, stop and get some sleep !!  Don't take a chance with your life !!  You will have time for a snooze on this ride if you do get tired. If a snooze doesn't help, then the smart thing to do IMO would be to terminate the ride.

And, in the above article,  Dr. Don says :  " You cannot overcome fatigue! You must learn to recognize it and take effective action REST! No ride is worth your life! "
